Academic Courses
English Department

In English classes at McFarland High School Early College, students can expect learning experiences that focus on developing strong reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills. Throughout the year, students will actively participate in discussions and activities to strengthen their understanding of grammar, language, and writing conventions.
Students will read multiple novels and other literary and informational texts throughout the year. They will write a variety of essays, including explanatory, argumentative, narrative, and synthesis essays. Through these experiences, students will learn how to analyze texts, develop well-supported ideas, use evidence effectively, and communicate clearly.
Students who demonstrate strong academic performance and a readiness for increased rigor may have opportunities to take Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) English courses, allowing them to further challenge themselves.

Social Studies Department
Welcome to the Social Studies Department!

The Social Studies Department at MHSEC teaches history and related courses, such as government and economics. From the earliest courses, students are taught the story of our world, our place in that story, and how our decisions impact others and the future. Emphasis is placed on academic writing in response to both primary and secondary documentation in order to ground students’ learning in real-world information, prepare them for college and other postsecondary education, and create the next generation of informed voters. To that end, the Social Studies Department is proud of the number of courses it provides as part of MHSEC’s dual enrollment program and the number of teachers who are professors for those classes, providing our students with on-site support as they strive to reach their lofty goals.
