McFarland Athletics
Welcome to McFarland Athletics! The Athletics Department is an integral part of the total educational process of McFarland High School Early College. Athletics is an excellent means of bringing together home, school, community, and culture, while contributing to the personal growth and education of students. Through athletics, students learn important life lessons such as competitive spirit, striving to achieve to the best of their ability, teamwork, structure, setting and achieving goals, overcoming adversity, respect for others, sportsmanship, and character.
McFarland High School Early College offers 18 sports for our students. We encourage all students to participate in our well-rounded program of interscholastic athletics for both young men and women.
It is my greatest hope that we as a school and community come together to continue to build successful programs and that our coaches, athletes, and spectators will conduct
themselves in a manner that shows respect and sportsmanship.
I am excited to be a part of the rich tradition of athletics at McFarland High School Early College and look forward to supporting our community.
Sincerely,
Shari Gonzales

Athletics Philosophy
At McFarland High School Early College, athletics participation enables young men and women to handle stress, learn self-discipline, and meet the challenge of facing other individuals mentally, physically, and emotionally. Lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork, competition, and how to win and lose gracefully are integral parts of our athletics program. As coaches, our approach should be to enthusiastically develop and guide the student athletes to their fullest potential. An athlete’s potential will be fully realized when the following ideals are present:
- Have a well-organized program with definite standards.
- Establish a close sincere rapport with the athletes in your program.
- Provide a well-supervised athletic program for as many students as possible, ensuring the well-being of the student athlete.
- Consistently motivate and challenge the athletes.
- Give each athlete a feeling of self-worth by finding something that each player can do that will contribute to your program. Emphasize positive motivation. Give praise and compliments to your athletes and remember to only criticize the play, not the player.
- Develop a winning program. Winning is not the only measurement of success. How your team handles losing will also be a measure of your success as a coach.
- Provide a foundation promoting loyalty, school spirit, and ownership within the high school community.
- Be a proponent of the entire sporting community at your high school. Actively encourage your players to attend other sporting events or be multiple sport athletes.
Registration Requirements
We handle athletics registrations electronically at Arbiter. All student-athletes (including cheerleaders) must register online and complete an annual sports physical before participating in practices or games. All the necessary paperwork, including our Athletic Activity Clearance Packet, can be found on Arbiter.
Student Eligibility
Cougar athletes must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and be on track to graduate. We review student eligibility at the end of each grading period; that eligibility status remains in effect until the next grading period. Students failing core classes must participate in academic intervention to remain eligible. Students with three or more Fs are automatically ineligible.
